Laurie grew up on a Minnesota farm in a musical family of 10 children. Her mother was an accomplished soprano and her father played the radio! She chose the bassoon in grade school after becoming enthralled by its robust sound. Laurie attended Eastman School of Music often working many odd jobs such as janitor and Head Nut Mixer to pay the way. She is one of the most active freelance bassoonists in the Twin Cities having played with many of Minnesota’s finest ensembles.
